Everyone wants to know what drawing tools artists and illustrators are using and I find myself regularly checking out what other artists are using too. So here’s a quick rundown of what’s currently bouncing around in my studio/office…

Traditional

My traditional illustrations are usually done on 11×17 sheets of Xerox color copy cover stock that I’ve gotten from my local copy shop. I had them cut down part of a ream into a variety of sizes so I have a stock to work with. I find this to be cheaper than buying stuff from the craft store and I’m supporting local business, yay! For my larger charcoal drawings, I’ve been using large sheets of bristol, but I’m experimenting with a few other papers and cardboards right now.

For some reason I only sketch in red pencil. I buy the Dixon Ticonderoga Erasable pencils by the box from Amazon. As far as inking pens, I’m all over the place but I’m a pretty big fan of the Pilot Futayaka from JetPens.com which has a large marker style brush tip on one side and a smaller one on the other. I also use a Pentel Pocket Brush and the Copic Multiliner 0.3.  As for colors, I’m on-board with Copic Sketch markers that I get from OtakuFuel.com.

Digital

This is probably what most of you are more interested in so here goes… I am currently using an 27″ Apple iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo with 12GB 1067MHz DDR3 RAM and an ATi Radeon HD 4670 256MB video card (it came with the machine when I got it in early 2010). I use Photoshop CS5 for most of the color and touchups and I use Manga Studio 5 to actually draw comics.

This summer I got a Huion GT-185HD because I couldn’t afford a 22″ Cintiq. Honestly though, I’m pretty happy with my choice, I haven’t had many of the problems other people have had. It works for me and I’m excited at how I’ve been able to adapt to using a new tool. I also spent the extra hundred bucks or whatever to get the Ergotron arm from Amazon.

So there you go. Those are the tools I’m currently using for stuff. If you have any questions, drop it in the comments below. Want me to draw you something, I’m taking scheduling commissions for early April right now so get in touch with me soon. Thanks for reading. Stay safe.
