I’m painting with a really broad stroke here but the EMS Professional Growth Scale I’ve made up seems appropriate. It’s a high stress job, with lots of sitting, eating on the run at all different hours, a messed up sleep cycle and honestly, the opportunity for bad habits. It’s not easy to squeeze in an hour workout while on duty in some EMS systems and it seems with some kind of regularity that meals are interrupted with calls. It’s the life we chose and sure, yeah, we should do a better job of being healthy. But the longer we stay in this business, the older we get and the harder it is to get motivated, especially if you are already behind 30, 40, 50 or more pounds.
