Removing wounded soldiers from the battlefield was the ambulance’s main task in the early days through 1832 when civilian ambulances were introduced in London. These transport carriages were used to transport cholera patients to hospitals while  receiving care. Horse drawn carriages were used extensively during the American Civil War where each Union regiment included an ambulance cart.
