As a probationary firefighter, you aren’t just evaluated on your ability to complete tasks safely and efficiently on the fire ground, how well you assess patients at a medical call or even how delicious your dinner is… There’s also the component of general knowledge, history and all those fire service history questions. The goal is partly to be a pain in your ass but also to genuinely see what you know. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to teach you things so you can speak with the public intellectually, with pride and with confidence. It’s the classic “wax on, wax off” Karate Kid lessons. Mister Miyagi has the big picture in mind whereas most probationary firefighters are so fixated on the individual task or question. Keep your eyes and ears open kids, someone is trying to show you the way.

Also, no comic tomorrow since you got one today. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July everyone!
