Many of us work a lot of hours and we know the repercussions but that doesn’t mean that occasionally we sucker ourselves into the never-ending shift. It might start off innocently as swapping a shift so you can cruise through a vacation later in the year. Inevitably it’s up against your regular shift, so now you’re working 48 straight. Tiring but no big deal, you’ve done it before and as long as you get a little nap in here and there, things are good. But then you’re offered a 24 for overtime and OH BOY time and a half looks good so you take that…

Three days later, a full 72 hours with hardly any sleep, only a 5-second shower, no time to unwind/reflect and everything around you appears a little blurry. You are out of touch with reality, your diet has been destroyed and honestly at this point, you don’t give a crap about much. Then someone mentions that there is a detail for 12 hours… They are having a hard time filling it… You want to do the right thing… You could really use the money for that vacation that got you into this in the first place… You can sleep tomorrow… Maybe… Welcome to emergency services my friend. Figure out where your limit is, try not to take your bad mood out on family and friends, keep that short fuse in check and please, please stay safe.
